Author Spotlight: A.W. Scott

Welcome

A.W. Scott

For my next Author Spotlight I’m joined by the amazing A.W. Scott! We talked about being influenced by music, loving photography, and her upcoming single dad romance.

Over to you Allie…

First things first, please introduce yourself!
My name is Allie, though most people know me as A.W. Scott. I started writing in 2020 in the MF world. I discovered MM that same year and the rest is history. When I’m not writing, I spend time raising my three kids in south Texas.

Tell us a little bit about your writing style.
It’s changed so much over time. I started writing short, super fluffy Princess Daddy romances. I still write those, though now there’s some suspense and even some hurt/comfort in my books. No matter the style, there is always an HEA for my main characters.

Describe your books in only three words.
Fluffy. Sweet. Steamy.

What’s your next book about and when is it coming out?
My next release, Roping his Daddy, comes out August 19th. It’s the second book in my Coleman Ranch series. The story follows Jackson, a single dad who believes himself to be straight, and Beau, the charismatic ranch hand Jackson falls head over heels for.

Out of all your books, which one are you most proud of?
This is such a hard question. Each book comes from a different place and they all have their own attributes that make them special. If I had to choose just one, then it would likely be XOXO, Neil. It was my first time writing a throuple. It has two Daddies in it who don’t want to admit their feelings for one another until they meet Neil.

What or who (or both) has influenced you most as a writer?
I’m most influenced by music these days. The entire Princess Pen Pals series & Club Deny series were written to Khalid’s discography.

What inspired you to start writing?
In general, I’ve always written. My mother still has piles of notebooks with worlds I’ve created.

For MM specifically, I had this story come to mind about a holiday love story that wouldn’t leave my head. I wrote it out, showed it to some people close to me, and they told me “you have to publish this.” Writing their story gave me the permission I needed to explore even more characters as they came to my mind. The plot bunnies haven’t stopped since.

What’s your writing process like? Do you have a typical “writing day”?
My process is quite simple really. I keep notes of plot bunny ideas or little ‘awww’ type moments on my phone. When I sit down to write on a project, I open Scrivener (a word processing app) and make a list of all the things the books should cover. It’s never in order. It’s more of a brain dump. After that, I go chapter by chapter writing what feels right for the characters.

I write anywhere from 5k to 12k per day on days I’m not doing admin type tasks.

What comes first for you – the plot or the characters?
It’s always the characters. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen something on IG or TikTok that inspired a character. Once I know their name, estimated age, and occupation, I then build the world around them.

What’s a book that you wish you’d written?
The Unexpected series by Cora Rose. She’s a newer M/M author who crafts stories I can’t seem to get enough of.

If you could only write one trope for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?
I’ll admit this question has probably been the hardest. If I were to be honest, it would probably be the Daddy and Boy/Little dynamic. The layers of the two characters coming together to express themselves through those roles can be done in endless ways.

What would be your three desert island books?
Unhinged by Onley James. Lola & the Millionaires duet by Kathryn Moon. The box set of Janie Crouch’s Linear Tactical series.

If one of your books could be made into a movie/TV series, which would you choose and who would you cast?
I would choose XOXO, Vaughn because it is the end of my Princess Pen Pals series. You would get to see all of the characters from the series come together which would be amazing. I’d probably take a vote from readers to get casting ideas. I’m terrible at knowing who would best fit the roles.

What do you like to do when you’re not writing? Do you have a secret passion or hobby that we don’t know about?
I’m rather simple. I love photography. I used to be an extreme couponer, though writing time replaced that. I’m fairly good with a sewing machine. Above everything else, baking is supreme. Cookies, cakes, and pies are my go to treats.

Finally, what’s your favourite dinosaur?
I’ve always liked pterodactyls simply for that dang ‘p’ at the start of their name. It amuses me to no end. I have no idea why. I guess it’s the writer in me.
